Biography

Alejandro Jaimes is Senior Research Scientist at Telefonica Research in Madrid, Spain, where he leads the Data Mining and User Modeling research area and group.

Prior to joining Telefonica Dr. Jaimes was Scientific Manager at IDIAP Research Institute (EPFL)(Switzerland). He has extensive international research experience in academia and industry, having worked at Fuji Xerox Nakai Research Center (Japan),  Universidad de Chile (Santiago, Chile), IBM Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights and Hawthorne, USA), IBM Tokyo Research Laboratory (Tokyo, Japan), Siemens Corporate Research (Princeton, USA), and AT&T Bell Laboratories (Homdel, USA). He has also collaborated extensively with various academic, governmental, and industrial partners.

Dr. Jaimes received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2003) and a M.S. in Computer Science from Columbia University (1997) in New York City.  His work has led to over 50 technical publications in international conferences and journals, and to numerous contributions to the MPEG-7 standard. He has been granted several patents, serves in the program committee of several international conferences (ACM Multimedia, CVPR, ICME, ICIP, CIVR, Creativity and Cognition, ICCV and ECCV Workshops on HCI, etc.), and frequently gives invited talks at major international conferences and workshops (ICCV workshop, ACCV, ICME, etc.).

Research Interests

I have worked on a variety of projects in several areas that for the most part use Computer Vision and Machine Learning and that involve humans directly and are rooted in principles, theories, or techniques from cognitive psychology, the arts, and information sciences, among others.

My current focus continues to be on Human-Centered computing (beyond HCI), in particular in data mining for user modeling, recommenders, and personalization, placing special emphasis on context (social networks, socio-cultural and psychological aspects) in fixed and ubiquitous environments. Having lived in 6 cities in 4 continents and traveled in over 60 countries has had an impact on my research so I try to look at the bigger picture and consider how cultural aspects inform the research process, how we can improve it to consider cultural differences, and the impact of technology on development.
