Biography

The flat and rainy planes of northern Europe are where I spent most of my scientific life. I have earned my university degrees studying acoustic signal emitted (!) by the healthy human ear. Later, I attempted to understand the human brain, more specifically phantom pain, by means of swimming caps equipped with a plethora of electrodes and superconductive electrical coils only to find out that this line of research involves a lot of “fishing in the dark”. Just before the end of the century, I decided to leave Germany northwards and work in a castle near Copenhagen where the hearing aid manufacturer Oticon conducts its "blue sky" research. I still enjoy the thought that some of my developments have found their way into hearing aids and with a little luck your own parents might listen to algorithms that I have co-designed. When I moved to sunny and inspiring Barcelona in 2004, I felt right at home: at the Universities Pompeu Fabra and UPC, I worked on music information retrieval and multi-modal smart rooms. This summer I was lucky to be hired for Nuria Oliver’s team at Telefónica I+D.
